1. STORY OF THE CULT PROJECT

It all started in 1997. I just wanted to make one of those old school
adventure games, opposed to the flood of Quake-style shoot-them-ups.

Low tech graphics and a good story were my weapon.
Living in the Middle East, I knew right away that the whole idea in Cult
should be a non-violent solution to a very delicate situation. As violence
was necessary in order to beat any other game at that time, in Cult you had
to use negotiations and trade in order to reach a peaceful solution.
...Oh, and one more thing - Cult was free.

So it really succeeded and hundreds of thousands have already played Cult,
but it started to look a bit outdated with its 8-bit graphics and sound.

On December 1999 I started working on Cult version 2, and in ten months it
was ready. This total revision include much better graphics (but it's still
ain't Descent Freespace, as one Beta tester said), excellent music by Jeremy
Robson, solutions to most of the bugs, and the best thing about it - the
multilingual feature makes Cult available in TEN languages!

As Cult is FREEWARE, all the people who have worked on it worked for free,
contributing their time, effort and good will. They have all volunteered
by contacting me through Cult's website, starting from Kevin Anderson
with his excellent proofreading work and great ideas and advice, and later
on with Vincent Bertrand and his translation of Cult to French. It continued
with all the rest of the translators that did a splendid job. I wish to
thank all of them for their work and friendship. I'd also like to thank all
the great Beta testers that helped me fix all the known bugs in Cult.

By making the second version on one year of international effort, I found a
host of warm and diligent people, willing to work hard for a common goal.

On May 2002 I realease this sequel to Cult, titled Cult II: FEDERAL CRIME.
Kevin Anderson has done a tremendous job as an assistant writer, and
Jeremy Robson soundtrack, written exclusively for Cult II, is absolutely
divine.

I hope you'll like the result!

				Sincerely yours,
					Lee Blum,
                                        Author of Cult II.

4. GAME STORY

" Hi there. My name is Zack Bon, and I'm a cop.

I've been serving in the Police Special Operations Unit for past three
years, and now I'm off to my second solo operation.

It was only a week ago that I emerged from the villa in which the members
of the "Cult of the Stars" had barricaded themselves. The story the papers
got was that the leader of the cult, in a sudden change of heart, handed
himself over to police custody and allowed his organization to be
dismantled. My secret work was not revealed. Of course, I'm not in this
business for fame. I work in the shadows.

Now, I am again called to duty. I waived my long promised vacation and
asked to take this new job. It wasn't easy, but my Chief, Sgt. Williams,
gave in to my pleas.

The target is Jonathan "Nathan" West, president and CEO of West Petrol Inc.
A man who controls a great deal of wealth.

West is suspected of financing and maybe even participating in an
underground militia based inside the United States. Reports suggest that
this militia is slowly preparing for the day when it will burst forth and
fight for its single cause: the defeat of the federal government.

We don't plan to wait for that time to come. West is a problem that must be
dealt with - now. But first, we must get proof of his dark activities.
That's where I come in.

Nathan West is throwing a party for business collegues and close friends.
I will disguise myself as Chris Perry, president of a small telephony
company named (in a burst of creativity from my superiors) C.P. Telephony.

My objective is to infiltrate Nathan West's party undetected. I will have
an invitation, but I will keep a low profile for the duration of the party
so as not to blow my cover.

Inside the party I will have to get more information about Nathan's
versatile interests and activities, and, if necessary, quietly slip into
the mansion's inner sanctum to gather more information. Inadmissable in
court as this information may be, it could supply our investigation with
valuable leads.

This operation will be done in cooperation with the Bureau. Forces will
secretly surround the compound, and a federal agent has been assigned to
help me by radio throughout the operation. I asked personally for the
beautiful Agent Heather Longside. We met just two days after last week's
case in a party held for me by the Special Operations Unit. Despite her
inexperience, I am sure she can still be of great assistance.
Once I am inside, Agent Longside will watch the back of the building from
the outside, monitoring any suspicous activity.
I will constantly be able to contact her and the Chief using a
microcommunicator I will carry on me.

This one is for America.

The chief has named this operation 'United We Stand'. And we will. "

6. TROUBLESHOOTING

Thanks to your E-mails I managed to answer most, if not all, of the
technical questions that may arise when trying to run the game.

--
Q: The game screen looks all messed up!
	OR
A window pops up when I start Cult II and says that I should change my
   Settings to small fonts.
A: The solution is simple, although a bit long. You have to change the
Windows system font set to "Small Fonts" in the display options in order
to run Cult. Right-Click your Desktop. Then click
'Properties' > 'Settings' > 'Advanced' > 'General' > 'Font Size:'
and select 'Small Fonts' from the drop-down menu.
--
Q: My computer freezes when I run Cult II or close Cult II in Full-Screen
   mode.
A: If this happens, wait a minute or so and sometimes the program will
unfreeze by itself. If nothing happens, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and wait
a few seconds. This will normally unlock the program. If that doesn't
help, sorry - you have to reset your computer. If the problem persists,
you ought to play Cult in Windowed mode.
--
Q: When running Cult in full screen mode, I get the game in the top-left
   quarter of the screen.

A: This problem occurs on some computers. In this case you will need to
change your screen's resolution to 640X480 manually. Right-click
your desktop, select 'Properties' and then make the necessary
   changes in the 'Settings' tab.
--
Q: Zack moves really slow (or fast) when I use the arrow keys.

A: Use F5 and F6 to make Zack's movements slower or faster, thus
easier to handle. If Zack moves really slow, restart your
computer and run Cult II with no other programs in the background.
--
Q: When I run Cult II I get "Can't load (or register) custom control
   picclp32.ocx".
A: From the "Start" menu, select "Run..." and type
   "c:\windows\system\regsvr32 picclp32.ocx".
--
Q: During installation I am asked to "Abort, Retry or Ignore" when one of
   the files is copied.
A: Press "Ignore" - It won't cause any problems. It just means that you
already have the file in question.
--
Q: I don't have the file msvcirt.dll.
A: Email me at Cult@Studio-Blum.com and I'll send the file to you directly.
